Detroit Garden Center Legacy Seminar

The Grosse Pointe Garden Center, Inc. is pleased and privileged to carry on the Detroit Garden Center’s popular gardening seminar series.

Featuring two renowned speakers plus an Open Q&A session for your gardening questions!

Janet Macunovich starts us off at 10:05 a.m. with practical approaches to “Simplify to Keep on Growing,” teaching us helpful hints at making gardening easier with less time, space, and energy. A topical Q&A opportunity with Janet immediately follows.

Janet Macunovich

Janet is a professional gardener, designer, author, and educator. She began designing beautiful landscapes for clients in 1980, establishing Perennial Favorites, a garden and landscape design firm in 1985. Janet taught a college garden design course in 1987, and published her first book in 1990. She is an active Advanced Master Gardener and established the Michigan School of Gardening where she was a director and senior instructor. Janet has been a speaker at the Detroit Garden Center gardening seminars for many years.

There will be a 30-minute intermission between speakers. In the first 10 minutes you may leave your computer for refreshment and not miss anything. The last 20-minutes we will hold an open Q&A where you can ask any general gardening questions, comments, or issues you may have or share information with others. You may submit your questions ahead using Zoom chat or just raise your hand.

Robert Pavlis is our second featured speaker with “Fun Facts About Plants,” learn about plants in general: why the pH of the soil may not matter, why you have never seen clematis petals, and why evergreens don’t make suckers. Robert will also answer other important questions: Do oaks really make taproots? Do sunflowers really follow the sun? Why do picked dandelions continue to make seed? His presentation will begin at 11:15 a.m. followed by a Q&A session with Robert.

Robert Pavlis

Robert Pavlis is a self-proclaimed “plantaholic” in addition to being an author, lecturer, and Master Gardener. His background in chemistry and biochemistry helps him research topics and understand the underlying science behind things. Robert has lived and gardened in southern Ontario, with a U.S. zone 5 climate, for over 30 years. He has written several books, Garden Myths 1&2, Building Natural Ponds, Soil Science for Gardener, Best Garden Plants for Connoisseurs, and a free e-book 241/2 Garden Design Ideas. Speaks at many local gardening events and horticultural meetings. Writes “Plant of the Month” articles for the Ontario Rock Garden & Hardy Plant Society. He also writes articles for some local newspapers and teaches several courses at the local university. His ongoing project is developing his 6-acre private Aspen Grove garden with over 3,000 perennials, grasses, shrubs, and trees.

Please note our original speaker, Judy Barton, on Reblooming Iris and Daylily Hybrids, unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond her control, is unable to give her presentation as scheduled. We hope to have her return at a later date.
